If you haven’t had a chance to see the highly acclaimed exhibit “Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933 – 1945″, then you have one more week. The exhibit, which is produced by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, is on display at Compass through Sunday, January 27th. The story of what happened to homosexuals in Nazi Germany is the subject of the exhibition, which was more than two years in development and is the first major exhibition on the subject for English-speaking audiences. The exhibit draws on materials from more than 40 archives and other repositories in eight countries.

The Nazis arrested an estimated 100,000 homosexual men, 50,000 of whom were imprisoned. Between 5,000 and 15,000 gay men were interned in concentration camps in Nazi Germany. These prisoners were marked by pink triangle badges and were among the most abused groups in the camps.

“The exhibition explores why homosexual behavior was identified as a danger to Nazi society and how the Nazi regime attempted to eliminate it,” says exhibition curator Edward Phillips. “The Nazis believed it was possible to ‘cure’ homosexual behavior through labor and ‘re-education.’” Gay men were subject to castration, institutionalization, and deportation to concentration camps.

The exhibit has been extended to include January 27th, the International Holocaust Day of Remembrance. Free to the public, the exhibit can be viewed Monday – Thursday 10 am – 8:30 pm, Fridays 10 am – 7 pm, Saturdays 2 pm – 6pm and on Sunday (only January 27th), 2 pm – 6 pm.

Compass is the Gay & Lesbian Community Center of Lake Worth and the Palm Beaches and aims to diminish stereotypes by challenging long-standing misconceptions about the character of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Compass is located at 201 N. Dixie Highway in Lake Worth.

After closing for 2 weeks in September, the Norton Museum of Art has re-opened with many exciting changes. Cafe 1451 has a new look, the galleries have been re-installed and the main lobby has been transformed with new art work. Inspired by the Norton’s proximity to the ocean, New York-based artist Rob Wynne incorporated silkscreened wallpaper and his signature glass-beaded drawings that reference life above, near, and under the sea. Titled I Remember Ceramic Castles, Mermaids & Japanese Bridges, this is the second site-specific artwork commissioned for the lobby.

The 2012-2013 season schedule of special exhibitions is highlighted by an Annie Leibovitz photography exhibition featuring more than three dozen works the museum recently purchased from the internationally-renowned photographer. That exhibition opens in January. This season also includes: a Norton-organized exhibition that will culminate in the awarding of the inaugural Rudin Prize for Emerging Photographers, a $20,000 cash prize that the Norton plans to present biennially; the Museum’s second RAW (Recognition of Art by Women) exhibition, featuring artist Sylvia Plimack Mangold, and Say it Loud, a celebration of art by Africans and African-Americans in the Museum Collection.

Other highly anticipated exhibitions include Keep Calm and Carry On: World War II and the British Home Front, 1938-1946, illustrating how England’s creative class mobilized to win the war on the home front, and The Radical Camera: New York’s Photo League, 1936-1951, which chronicles how a group of young, idealistic photographers, most of them Jewish, first-generation Americans, used the power of the documentary photograph during a tumultuous period that spanned the New Deal reforms of the Depression, World War II, and the Cold War.

Art After Dark. What began as a monthly experiment in the summer of 2009, has become a weekly celebration of diverse cultures, performing and visual arts, great food, and socializing at the Museum. Art After Dark draws hundreds of people to the Museum for a variety of activities, tours, and culinary treats each Thursday night from 5 – 9 pm. For information click here.

After much anticipation, celebrated restaurateurs Ed Schmidt, Ozzie Medeiros and executive chef Steven Polowy have teamed together to create one of the most exciting new additions to the local culinary scene in quite awhile. Located just a block south of The Norton Museum of Art on South Dixie in the Mango Promenade Historic District of West Palm Beach, Table 26 offers global comfort food in a smart-casual, trendy atmosphere. After feedback from numerous guests and a few first hand experiences, here are a few of the menu items which stand out: Fried Calamari “pad thai”, toasted peanuts, lime & soy-ginger mayo; roasted beets, toasted hazelnuts, baby spinach, pears & goat cheese; wild mushroom omelette with bistro cut sirloin & petit salad; BBQ Chicken Dinner, corn on the cob, baked beans and cole slaw; and finally the s’mores fudge sundae with homemade marshmallows & graham crackers. Yummy! The wine list is also extensive. The atmosphere is vibrant with a bar and a beautiful outside terrace which is covered in case of bad weather. The prices range from moderate to slightly expensive. The restaurant is open 7 days a week for dinner and will be open for lunch starting this Fall. Valet parking. Call 561-855-2660 for reservations (which are definitely needed).

Oh! I almost forgot to mention. Table 26 is 5 – 6 minutes walking distance from Grandview Gardens!
